Educational orientation as an important task of professor in educational institutions, that envolving a full contact between students and professors, where the contact face to face is a special one; but how to keep this close relation when moodle platform is used.
Dear Lorenzo, some of the ways to engage your new students using moodle are evident in the priorities that you have highlighted in your responses. Establishing this personal connection to students is a priority through orientation activities and this relies on some access to you and your attributes that students will want to gravitate toward. Moodle is a flexible platform for using a range of diverse media so I recommend looking for ways to make your content organised into accessible, small chunks, include video content of yourself speaking personally about your role, your aspirations for your new students and the value you place on your learning community, and use these as opportunities to open the door for interaction and engagement through a range of interactive, low-level tasks. I suggest promoting the personal connection and personal relevance of your content through low-stakes interactions while the pragmatics of moodle and the longer term goals of your programs sit in the background. Essential to any strategy with digital technologies is the support of fabulous staff knowledgeable in the platform so a coffee with those colleagues now might alert you to some of the functions and capabilities that are available to you to start building your approach. I agree that F2F interaction keeps a healthy relationship between the teacher and students. Moodle do not provide any interactivity. There are several plugins (Moodle virtual classroom plugin) available, which can be integrated with the Moodle platform to make it interactive and video classes can be taken using the same. You can also use freely available video options like Google Hangout etc. and integrate the same within the Moodle framework.
For the communication purposes Moodle offers a number of ways in which you could proceed, for different purposes. Nevertheless, it is not expected to use all these modes. Choose, perhaps the best modes of communication that suit your learning and teaching purposes, and use them well, rather than trying to manage multiple communication arenas and risking falling behind in some.
