I am developing a stable isotope analysis project at southern coast of Portugal and I need to collect muscle sample from small deep sea sharks such as Etmopterus spinax, Etmopterus pusillus, Scyliorhinus canicula and Galeus Melastomus.
I need to get muscle samples from these sharks but they will be alive and will be released afterwards. How can I do this without harming too much the shark?
Perfect, thank you both for the information. Murat I've done this with great whites but I wasn't too sure about using this same technique on smaller sharks. As you said, I can adapt, maybe using a smaller tool to get smaller samples, I need just 1g of muscle. Robert thank you, but is too deep to dive and I don't have the budget for a submarine, but definitely will wear a pair of gloves :')

Eu faço biopsias de 6 mm...tanto em animais menores quanto maiores. E geralmente dão de 40-70 mg de músculo (tirando a camada de tecido dérmico). Eu faço analises de ácidos graxos, e da super tranquilo. Geralmente para isótopos usam menos que isso ainda, ai daria para fazer menores dependendo. =))

Oi querida obrigada! Na verdade já fiz as amostragens. Abri um buraquinho com bisturi e usei uma agulha the punctura de 4mm para retirar um pouco do músculo sem a pele. Deu certo :)
