I have been struggling to get endorsement for putting preprint in arXiv, but I a unable to get it. What is the best method to get endorsement in arXiv for physics or mathematics?
In my view, arXiv is the premier site for preprints.
Email someone you know in your area who already puts their preprints on arXiv and ask them to endorse you. I have endorsed a colleague to give them access.
Weird. While I have only uploaded a couple of papers at arXiv, I do not recall there being a system of endorsements when I registered and posted my first manuscript - is this a new thing?
Is it the same type of endorsements as on this site? When I created my profile at arXiv I do not recall there being any endorsements - but perhaps it's because I was not looking for it. :-) I would say that arXiv is 100 times more serious than RG.
Also: endorsements are like a castle in the sand - it may look good, but it is not sustainable.

I agree. However, there is an implicit form of endorsement for each arXiv paper, since each paper submitted to arXiv is classified and assigned to moderator for a particular class of papers. The arXiv is very careful in moving a submitted paper from the submission state to the post state in which a submitted paper is assigned an arXiv number and appears as a preprint in the arXiv.
I also agree with @ David A. Towers, who writes that the arXiv is the premier site for preprints.

I would like to add that it is not entirely safe to endorse something that has not been proof-read and been through a thorough peer review. :-) But I can certainly understand that one may like a paper, without digging through all the details.
The arXiv started the endorsement requirement for some highly demanded areas (like physics-hep) some years ago, due to the insistence of lots of cranks wanting to publish their "papers" there. The endorsement works as follows: you must look for someone who is actively uploading papers in the arXiv and has the "Endorser" flag. When you look for a preprint in the arXiv, you will notice at the bottom of the page a link like that:
Which authors of this paper are endorsers?
By clicking on it you will see who can endorse you. Look for some person who knows you or your work, then ask this person to endorse you. If she agrees, then try to submit your paper. You will receive the "need for endorsement" message, asking you to provide the mail of one possible endorser. Then, after you give the name of your endorser, she will receive an email saying:
"XYZ requests your endorsement to submit an article to the ABC section of arXiv. To tell us that you would (or would not) like to endorse this person, please visit the following URL:
https://arxiv.org/auth/endorse?x=somecode"
The endorser will click on the link and will be asked for a code which is available in the mail. That's all, you have been endorsed.
The endorser will be reminded that she is NOT asked to judge the quality of the work, just to make a statement about her confidence in your status as a working scientist. But, of course, the first one that should be convinced about the quality of your work is yourself, because someone will have to raise her hand to support you.
I would like to add my experience in this regard. Initially ( in late 90's) there was nothing like endorsement. One could resister and submit their papers in arxiv. I submitted a few of my papers. But due to non submission for long time and change in affiliation, my account was deactivated. Recently I thought of submission again but I required endorsement. This time one of my friends, doing research in the same field did the favour.
This is a new system in Arxiv to stem the flow of bogus preprints. Please note the Arxiv subject classifications and find people in those categories who would agree to endorse your papers by reaching out to them first. For ex: cs.DL, find people who already published under that class and request them to endorse.
