I have electrospun cross-linked polystyrene fibres on a glass substrate. I am looking for chemical or physical methods to generate porosity (to increase its surface area).
There are several way that can possibly do the job:
1. Use polymer blends which contains two or more types of polymers that may have different surface tension then during spinning, rough or porous surface can be achieved. In your case, if you need pure polystyrene, you can consider post-treatment which means that you can remove the polymers that you don't want in the composite fiber.
2. Try to use solvent blends with different evaporation temperature which may create some roughness on the fiber.
3. Post-treatment such as plasma treatment may also increase the surface area.
4. Add different types of solids that have your desired structure (such as SiO2 nanoparticles for nanopores, Clay for slit pores) and wash them away after spinning.
