ERROR: /etc/snort/rules/smtp.rules(22) Undefined variable in the string: $HOME_NET. Seems like smtp.rules is not able to read the value of HOME_NET frtom snort.conf file.

Hi! My guess is you have a mistake in some rule definition.
Check (or post the result of) :
cat /etc/snort/rules/smtp.rules
cat /etc/snort/rules/icmp.rules

Maybe it read that error because of your network connection ,try to activate proxy setting .

Take a look at the snort.conf file found in one etc or usr/local/etc and specify that in your command line. Do you get the same result?
