We are a research group working in the field of laser processing. We want to build our own femtosecond (or picosecond laser) for micromachining (fine marking for example). Do your know any low cost solution ? (publications, reports, do-it-yourself instructions, simple low cost source, etc...). Just for information, our research activities are linked to IREPA Laser, a french development institute working in laser processing, based in Strasbourg. They use for example Amplitude Femtosecond Laser system, but their costs are higher as 100 kEuros. We think that it is possible now to build femtosecond laser "smaller, cheaper and faster". We search any information about this idea.

Still an interesting topic in 2021. Ultrafast lasers are still expensive! The smallest available laser which can be used for material processing (means 3-5 W of average power, 15-100ps pulses, 30-60uJ pulse energy) still costs 25kEUR-45kEUR . :/

This aged well. Femtosecond lasers are still expensive in 2023! xD

Christopher A Tucker You still need a femtosecond laser to do that, there is no way around it. How this works is that the high intensity laser pulses just below the damage threshold change the structure of silica - meaning the distribution of how many Si-O bonds make a ring.
