Assocated with each shapefile in ARCGIS is the attribute table with extension .dbf. You can convert that to Excel or bring it into Access. Would that help you to read off the Excel or Access file?

You could use the gIntersection function in the Rgeos package, looping over your minimum convex polygons, selecting the gridcells that intersect with it, and doing whatever you need to with them. Another option would be to use PostGIS if you know some SQL.
