My dissertation research was based on qualitative interviews. I understand that coding/analysis is done typically by multiple researchers but since this was my dissertation, the coding and analysis were conducted independently. Currently, I am finishing up a manuscript for journal submission which I think is great but I am concerned about the method section. How can I justify me as a single coder and address data integrity concerns? Should I revisit the data and have two of my colleagues code the transcripts? Any advice is appreciated!
Being a single analyst shouldn't preclude your study from publication - but you may have to 'work harder' in your manuscript to describe your rigour audit trail - particularly in relation to all the components of qualitative trustworthiness.
Hi, independent researchers, independent coders increases the validity and reliability of the coding and anlyse of qualitative data. If you did not followed this way, you should have to put forward a logical reason.
I think that a lot depends on the kinds of coding that you did. In particular, if you used a more deductive approach in a content analysis that produced counts of coders, then reviewers are more likely to want evidence for inter-rater reliability. In contrast, if you used a more inductive and interpretive approach, then there is less need for such reinforcement -- indeed, it is unlikely to apply at all to interpretive approaches, where it is the analyst's insight that matters most.
