If you can't find a suitable edge when the membrane is mounted flat, you could embed it in epoxy, cure it and then section it for SEM.

if your membrane is polymeric, for cross sectional image, you can use liquid nitrogen. put it in the liquid nitrogen and then cut it.

for a polymeric membrane, after cutting the membrane for a cross sectional examination by SEM, I would recommend that you coat the cross section of the membrane by a thin conductive layer, i.e., carbon, gold, via a sputter coating in order to avoid any build up of charge on the membrane during the SEM examination. Then, you can glue the prepared membrane

in a conducting glass for mounting in the SEM prior the SEM examination.
