Cellulose content

1 g of carrot bagasse sieved between 40 and 60 mesh was weighed with 0.1 mg precision, the humidity of the sample was determined in parallel. The weighed sample was placed in a 100 mL balloon with refluxing condenser. In a beaker, 10 mL of nitric acid and 10 mL of ethanol were taken (be careful with the mixture). The mixture was added with the balloon with the sample. It was brought to a gentle boil in a water bath using a reflux condenser for one hour. Then the liquid was decanted with filter crucible No. 02, adding 50 mL of the nitro-alcoholic mixture, taking care not to pass bagasse to the filter and boiling for another hour. The attack was repeated for the third time with the nitro-alcoholic solution and after one hour of gentle boiling it was filtered under vacuum using the filter crucible. The residue was washed with deionized hot water and dried in an oven at 103 ± 2 ° C until constant weight (TAPPI, 2004). The result was calculated with the following formula as an average percentage of cellulose with two decimal places:
