It is well known that absorptive fine roots play significant roles in belowground resource acquisition (e.g. water and nutrients) and ecosystem processes. One of the most vital processes is root exudation. However, the contribution of root exudation (quality and quantity) from absorptive roots has yet to be identified. Is there any appropriate way to quantify this part of the contribution?
Root exudation is the release of organic compounds and ions from the root system into the surrounding environment. Absorptive roots are responsible for the uptake of water and nutrients from the soil. Transport roots are responsible for the movement of these compounds and ions to other parts of the plant. The amount of root exudation can be distinguished between absorptive roots and transport roots by measuring the concentration of compounds and ions in the soil around each type of root. However, two technical difficulties need to be realized. First, the compound mixtures in the rhizosphere not only come from root exudation but contain some other sources, such as soil microbes; thus, these two parts need to be distinguished. Second, as we know, the concentration of root exudates is relatively low and may be under detection, making it harder to distinguish between the two: absorptive-sourced and transport-sourced exudates.
Yes, those are certainly two technical difficulties that need to be taken into account when measuring the amount or concentration of compounds exudated by the absorptive or transport roots. One way to help distinguish between the two sources could be to sample the rhizosphere before and after the introduction of root exudates and then analyze the differences in the compound mixtures. Additionally, using sensitive analytical methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) could help to detect even the low concentrations of root exudates.
