Hii, I am trying to dissolve 30 mg/L quantity of 98% pure Deca-brominated Diphenyl Ether powder (BDE 209) into Mineral Salt Medium but it does not form a solution in medium as the solubility of BDE 209 is very less (0.1μg/L) in water. I've found that some solvents ((wt% of BDE 209): 0.05 acetone; 0.1 toluene; 0.48 benzene; 0.42 methylene bromide; 0.87 xylene) might serve but these solvents are toxic for bacteria. Does anyone have found a non-toxic method for dissolving BDE 209? Thanks in advance.
Sometimes it's possible to dissolve a chemical in a solvent to a very high concentration and then serially dilute so the solvent is in a tolerable concentration. You also have to make a solvent control plate/broth as a comparison.
No trick will ever allow you to dissolve 30 mg/l in aqueous medium if the solubility of BDE 209 is only 0.1 mg/L. This doesn’t mean that microorganisms can’t use it as a substrate. They can either utilize the 0.1 mg/L that will steadily dissolve into the medium or adsorb at the aqueous/organic interphase.
