There are a variety of approaches used to estimate that have been used by soil scientists, agronomists, foresters, botanists, range conservationists and perhaps others. Some approaches may have standards, and some were techniques developed by specific scientists, studies or research. As suggested by Dr. Pegman, selecting plots, digging up, drying and weighing is arduous, but can work well for grasslands, but more difficult for forests, where tree height, basal area, increment borers and other measurements or sampling might be used. Soils are often classed relative to their approximate site index for a specific species or forest type, climate, range potential, land use, etc.
