If you are growing some crystals (for example, silicon), what are the possible shapes? Such as hexagons, cubes, octagon, etc. How can I determine the possible shapes? Or if I see a shape, say octagon, is there a way to validate the possibility of it being a certain single-crystal material?

The shape is highly dependent on the environment for the crystal growth. Mineralogists use the shape information (the crystal habit)

to guess the specie but no, I would not use the shape information to guess the material (I have seen octahedral crystals of several fcc species)
