I want to detect hydrogen using GC-TCD with capillary PH PLOT/Q column having 150 oven temperature and 250 detector temperature. The carrier gas is helium. I know argon is the most recommended carrier gas for hydrogen detection but I can't change the gas because it is used for other purposes too. Please help me and give me some good suggestions. I am producing biohydrogen and checked it on GC TCD using above conditions but peaks are not appearing.
You need to have a significant difference in thermal conductance between your analyte and your carrier. There is not enough difference between helium and hydrogen to give you any sensitivity. You need to switch to either nitrogen or argon.
Do it according to Mark's suggestion. Next, change the temp of your oven to 40 deg. C- it will assure separation of H2 from other light gases.
