you could specify block-based sample times if this is appropriate to your task. Pls. see examples:

when runnig simulation look closer into powergui for time-step and resolution. even if you make sample time in electronic components you need to adjust step time in powergui.

I would choose "Variable-step" in Solver Option of "Model Configuration Parameters".

In "Additional Option" you can also choose the "Relative Tolerance" and "Absolute Tolerance" that you can accept. In this way you control accuracy, the ode-solver uses the greater time step that grants it. You must also select the solver type that best suits to your simulation type.

I don't think that there is a best method of that developed by the ode-solver designers.

I had notice than the sample time of the "powergui" from Simscape Power System Simulink Library, can not go to the same Sample Time of "Model Configuration Parameters" from Simulink because the outputs lost accuracy. 

for long time simulation you have to select phasor from simulation type.be carful about using the components because all of the blocks can not be used in phasor simulation type. for accuracy run the simulation with a sample time and see the results. make the sample time half and run the simulation again and compare the results. if results change, make the sample time half. do this until get fix results.

I faced the same issue. If I run a simulation to see the power flow in a microgrid for 24 hours, I need to wait for at least a month. Also, the simulation crashed because of the memory problem.
