Currently I am doing adsorption studies with four types of biochar prepared from four feedstocks. We evaluate adsorption performance by TOC reduction in grey water. I noticed that after putting biochar into the grey water sample, the organic carbon content showed sudden increment, indicating that biochar is releasing organic matter into water. How to consider this phenomena when analyzing the results?

Biochar in water is always going to release organic matter--instead why not use ultraviolet (UV) light, advanced oxidation, ion exchange and membrane filtration?
Yes it will release organics, but the appropriate approach depends on what you want to know
I think you can do a TOC leaching test first, by adding biochar to distilled water and maintain your experimental conditions, to see if biochar releases organic matter to distilled water also or if it only releases while it is in your considered grey water sample.
Then, I guess you can test with a control sample for each set of experiments and do a correction by considering the leached organic content.
