Can anyone suggest what is the proper procedure to cut small specimens of anodized aluminium in order to make a detailed cross section image of the anodic layer. We are talking about ~3mm thickness flat samples (disk) in 6xxx alloy. Working with a lab that can make nice images of the surface, but poor results with sections.

Does it require gold deposition after cutting, to make the Al2O3 surface conductive??

Thanks
