I am trying to test spinach growth in a container and I'm trying to figure out the rate of fertilizer I should use. A lot of literature mentions using 150 lb/ha in their pot studies but how to I account for the volume of my pot and not just the surface area?

Be careful with the units there. lb/ha would be unusual. ... 49 kg/ha ~ 1 lb/1000-square-feet ~ 44 lb/ac.

I would just use the surface area of the pot to keep the units as mass of fertilizer per surface area of the soil.
So, for example, if I'm not doing some math wrong:
150 kg/ha = 150,000 g/ha = 150,000,000 mg/ha
150,000,000 mg/ha = 15,000 mg/m2 = 1.5 mg/cm2
And you have about 80 cm2,
so, 120 mg / pot
