I would ask the following question: Are leaders of various types aware of the special qualities of their leadership ? and then you go on, specifying the qualities of each leadership, and arrange a questionnaire with several optional answers (Likert questionnaire).
It is better to use ready-made global standards.. you can find them in published research and studies
I read your question with interest and from a research design perspective, I wondered if you should actually avoid giving any kind of options or checklist for respondents to select from - this might run the risk of them choosing things that they aren't aware of, but don't want to be seen as 'not knowing'.
It's a bit of a pain, but getting them to describe the leadership styles that they are aware of and running some textual analysis over that might eliminate the risk? Anyway, something I thought about which might (or might not!) be helpful. Good luck with your research, all the best....

My suggestion would be to locate a high quality literature review of leadership theories/styles in general or within a given domain of interest (for example, education, health care, etc.), then develop a literature-based table of the key qualities/characteristics of each theory/style, and then design a questionnaire asking respondents to list the x number of qualities they associate with each style. You could then analyze the data by tabulating the number of key qualities/characteristics identified by each respondent for each style that align with your master table of qualities/characteristics.
While the data analysis would be more tedious, doing so would, I believe, greater insights into what the respondents believe/think than using a objective/quantitative method that could involve a process of elimination, 'lucky guesses,' etc.
