How can I choose the best surfactant for dispersing AL2O3 nanoparticle in Ethanol? (Al2O3 Gamma - 20 nm) and (ethanol 99.6 %)
I have this surfactant : Sorbitan Oleat ( Span 80 ) - Tween 80 - Triton X100 - PEG 600-PEG400 -SDS -SDBS -Oleic acid- Ethanolamine -
Best method when i comes to selecting dispersant is to do a simple settling study over a period of time for different dispersant and different concentrations. Another important thing to keep in mind is the amount of active component in the surfactant/dispersant, for powder with very high surface area its better use surfactant with higher percentage of active components. Its also good to know what kind of dispersion action each dispersants/surfactant have as there are different mechanisms.

One of the most effective dispersants for nanoparticles are alkylphenol ethoxylates having a chain length of approximately 8-16 ethoxylene groups. Usefulness of these substances is determined mainly by the presence of specific hydrophobic group (with the aromatic ring), and also linked to the hydrophobicity of molecule, the specific susceptibility to formation of micelles.
I am not sure whether surfactants can very much improve dispersion in ethanol.
