I am conducting research on job satisfaction. kindly share your ideas on professional status of librarians. which factors should be considered to find out the professional status of librarian.
“Profession means an occupation, especially on requiring extensive education in a branch of science. ... Librarianship thus can be a great profession for those who enter it with the seriousness of purpose”. Librarianship is, definitely, an occupation, which demands specialized knowledge and skills.
Libraries are the heart of academic and research institutions having store houses of knowledge resources. Any old documents can be found in the physical libraries it is not found through Google or elsewhere. Librarians are driving force to manage libraries from users point of view definitely require special types of training or education. Organization of libraries have paramount importance only scientifically train persons do it.
Librarian is an official job title and indicates a certain level of education. However, in many parts of the world, this label is conferred upon all who work in a library. Just as not everyone who works in a hospital is a certified doctor, not all who work in a library are certified librarians (but that doesn't mean that they cannot be helpful in some way). If you wish to distinguish the level of education a person has in the profession ask whether the person has a degree or diploma. Usually someone has a Master's degree in Library Science (in Alberta, Canada, this gives the person the right to use the title "Librarian"), or a diploma in Library Technology (and the person's title is "Library Tech.")
In my country (Puerto Rico) to be a professional Librarian you must have a master's degree from a university specially awarded by ALA. But being a professional goes much further. The sources of information both in printed and electronic format must be known. You will know how the online catalog works and be able to handle the different components of it. Mastering the cataloging and classifying process, collection development, purchasing, among many other functions. The professional librarian must know about budget, administration, leadership, human resources, technology, because at any time he may have to assume any of those roles. At this point, postgraduate education plays a very important role because it is there where the professional is nurtured in all these areas.
