I have performed a study looking at the knowledge of physicians on VAP (ventilator assc. pneumonia ). In this, a total of 16 questions were asked.
Attached are some of the variables (viz. the questions) collected. For the scoring, 2 marks would be given for the right answer and zero for the wrong one. One mark would be given for those who answered "I am not sure".
Can someone show me how do I write a command in R to score their marks based on their responses please?

please clarify your problem and give us more details. Do you want to make an aggregation (mean, sum, mox etc.) for all rows to get a kind of 'total score'? If yes, you can use RowSums() or RowMeans() or apply(X, MARGIN = 1, FUN).

Hi, you only explained what 0, 1, and 2 marks mean. What does 3 mean? As @Akos Bede-Fazekas has mentioned, you can just use the rowSums() function to determine the total score for each row in case that's what you want to do. All you need to do is to create a new variable via the $ sign or dplyr::mutate() and use the rowSums() function.

What I meant to say was; I aim to score the subjects' knowledge based on their responses with the green rows below being the correct ones; thus, I wish to write a syntax in R to total up all the scores and come out with an aggregate score for each subjects (there are a total of 16 questions for the knowledge section).
And I aim to give 2 marks for the correct answers (the green ones), zero for the wrong answers and 1 for those who answered "I am not sure"

in this case you just want to transform the 1-2-3 marks to 0-1-2, and then summarize the marks. Let's say that your data is stored in a data.frame called DF. Then this is what you need:
