The influent substrate concentration is 470 g/m3 and the concentration of biomass in the aeration tank is 3000 g/m3. The substrate conversion rate is 2000 g/m3.d and the associated Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS) production rate was 1200 g VSS/m3.d.

Yield = Quatity of biomass /substrate consumed = 1200 gVSS/m3.d /2000 g/m3.d = 0.6
Aerobic yield coefficient is typcally 0.4-0.6 and anaerobic 01-0.15. If wastewater sludge is aerated for a long time (aerobic sludge stabilization) the yield can be reduced down to 0.1-0.2. Units g COD/g COD. The sludge yield for aerobic biomass is 0,67 gCOD(biomass)/gCOD(removed) or 0,45-0,5 gVS/gCOD. The actual "observed" yield in real treatments takes into account the decay and is about 0,3 gVS/gCODremoved, depending on the sludge retention time (or "sludge age"). VS = volatile solids
