How we perform the CO stripping analysis for the electrochemically active surface area (EAS) calculation? Kindly point out the operational procedure to perform this and can explain the calculation as well.
Below procedure is for Pt electrode in acidic electrolyte. Potentials are vs RHE.
Step 1. Saturate the electrolyte with N2 (or Ar) keeping the WE at 0.1 V for > 30 min and the scan CV at say 50 mV s−1from 0.1 - 1 V.
Step 2. Saturate the electrolyte with CO keeping WE at 0.1 for 30 min. Switch the gas from CO to N2 (or Ar) and purge for > 30 min maintaining the WE at 0.1 V. Scan a CV from 0.1 to 1 V.
Take baseline from Step 1. Do not chenge the order of measurements, because complete stripping of CO is difficult.
ECSA calculation is similar to that with H2 adsorption/desorption. First find the total charge of stripped CO by integrating the peak (in C). Then devide the charge by the standard charge of monolayer CO surface coverage (420 10^-2 C/m^2) and the absolute value of loaded Pt (in g). Finally, you will get ECSA in m^2/g unit.
