Can anybody please tell me if there is a way to calculate surface temperature of a hot body. The body can be a metal slab or molten metal lying in a holding bed. Is there any way we can calculate the surface temperature of it and also any to determine how the temperature of the material change with the thickness of the surface.

I don't know if this system is exactly suitable for its measurements but I really like the thermal imaging cameras for temperature monitoring.

Their high thermal sensitivity makes these infrared cameras ideally suitable for precise and dynamic tasks. Different performance classes enable a suitable model to be selected for every application. The camera is connected via a USB interface, which also supplies the power.

Any non contact type temperature measuring instrument going to measure the surface temperature,
also any to determine how the temperature of the material change with the thickness of the surface - for this part of the question - it is thickness of the material - as thickness increases the volume, surface area of material increases, thus, the bulk material going to consume heat, and higher surface area dissipate heat, both leads to heat loss,
so regarding amount of heat consumed by bulk or volume of material - specific heat capacity may be used
for heat dissipated to the surface - total surface area and surrounding temperature may be considered

Some instruments are used for measuring temperatures from a distance. We use laser gun for this, search for it may be it suitable for your work.
I have understood that you do not have access to the surface for measuring its temperature.
You have to use the heat transfer equation for calculating the surface temperature.
Solving the equation for simple geometries is not complicated - but you need the thermal parameters of the body and the environment and first of all the heat transfer coefficient.
If they are not available, you have to make "educated" guesses.
On both sides of the interface you will have transient layers.

1. contact type thermometer
2. pyrometer - non contact type infrared thermometer
3. tape thermometer - contact type. Color changes according to temperature
