The objective is to estimate the height h1 of the receiver above the ground plane given the information that is available to the receiver, which obviously amounts to the received signal (amplitude and/or phase) in combination with (possibly) other pieces of information that can be considered as known in some other way. You may do this in different ways and involve different approximations, given the partial information that is available. It is attractive to be able to complete this estimation task based on as little information as possible.

Of course, height depends on thousands of aspects. But, if you wants a simple "rule of thumb" for mobile communications, consider the ideal height in a homogeneous area (for example a open land or suburban city) . The coverage can be calculated as 4.4 times the height of the antenna. The result is in Km ant the height in meters. The coverage radius is limited by antenna height. The quality of the link is limited by power, sensitivity and of course interference.
This simple formula has a theoretical background. I don´t include it here, but I can send you if you want.
