You could assess the recreation value using the travel cost model, nursery function (eg: for shrimps) can be valued using a replacement cost approach, carbon sequestration can be assessed using an estimate of carbon sequestered in the mangroves every year and a carbon price,
As you are from India, you may see the theses (masters) submitted by my junior fellows Mr. Rejeesh . E , Mr. Anoop , P on wetland economic valuation at GKVK, Bangalore. Hard copies are available at the Library. They give all the details. If you are interested you can also see my (Amjath Babu) thesis on economic valuation of a tropical forest also. Unfortunately soft copies are not with me now.
Dear friend thank you very much since I am based at Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair India. It will be difficult for me to go to Bangalore. Please give me the soft copies of your theses and other reading material.
Kindly searcing about mangrove-fishery interlinkages. It will give you a deal perception how to measure ecological funtion between mangrove as an ecosystem and fishery as its produced the mangrove ecosystem.
If you start converting intrinsic ecological values (i.e., non-market values) to market ones, you are admitting there are technological substitutes for the natural feature (i.e., mangroves). For example, if mangroves provide a valuable nursery habitat for coastal fisheries priced at 1,000,000$, what is your response when someone comes along (e.g., Seaworld) and says they can provide the same service at one tenth the cost, using one tenth the land? No fall-back position, here. You've already swallowed the market ideology, and must accept its judgement, if you wish to be consistent. Bad idea.
There are many methods that can be used to value ecological functions of mangrove depending on what kind of ecological functions or services that you are interested in (e.g. shoreline protection, species conservation, flood protection, water flow, pollution control, sediment and nutrient retention, etc...). Some of these methods include change in productivity, damage cost avoided, preventive expenditure, hedonic price,...etc. Understanding the physical relationship of mangrove and environmental as well as economic impacts are important to establish the framework of the study.
