I am trying to calculate DBH (diameter at breast height) in order to determine the demography and basal area of trees. However, some of the trees have multiple stems which makes it difficult to calculate the DBH. I have learned that the quadratic formula is generally used for such cases, but I am open to other suggestions.

I also want to compare the basal area and density of dead trees versus live trees. However, some of the trees with multiple stems have both dead and live trunks in the same tree, which makes it challenging to make a clear distinction between the two. "Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this issue?" I would appreciate it! Thanks!
