There are several guides on this topic from a few years ago:

Today it appears that competition has increased significantly, and simply following advices from the past is no longer sufficient. What just several years ago merited becoming a PI or a lecturer, now hardly qualifies for a postdoc or a teaching assistant. In the future I anticipate that massive open online education, public research funding restructuring and increasing globalisation may further disrupt academia as we know it. What would you do to build a successful academic career, if you started now?
