I am trying to find a good way of preserving water samples to measure concentrations of CH4 and CO2 at the same time. We are measuring the samples with a Picarro where it is possible to get CO2 and CH4 at the same time. For preservation we are currently using Na-Azide. However, this is only inhibiting gram-neg. bacteria which means that part of the microbes are still active. Furthermore, I would not mind using a less toxic substance. I have been thinking about CuSO4 and know that some people are preserving there samples with it. Does anyone have a reference for this? How efficient is it in killing/inhibiting microbes? How high should the concentration of CuSO4 be? I appreciate your help.
