In most grafting studies, I usually only see reports of the final survival rate (e.g. after 1 or 2 weeks 95% of scions survived). However, through personal experience with tomato, I observed that the graft could heal in largely different durations: some grafts could heal (i.e. the veins start to connect) after only 2 days, evidenced by the scion's leaves no longer withered, while others might not heal until day 6. And this difference significantly affected the graft plant's performance.

So I would like to ask if anyone knows a scientific method to assess whether the graft starts to heal (the veins successfully connect)? Assessment based on leaf withering as I mentioned above may not be very accurate. Some published references would be very helpful.
