How to approach measuring psoas muscle cross-sectional area and density? I have read in studies that investigators have been measuring psoas cross sectional area "at the first point of L3 at which both transverse processes are visible". However, it is unclear how the investigators have approached L3. it could be from L5/S1 and counting up, or counting down. obviously this is important as the measurement would be different depending on a cranial or caudal approach. does anyone know what is the radiology or radiological standard for this measurement? many thanks alex.
Only method for 100% accuracy in counting L1 or any other vertebra iwhether in Radiology or gross anatomy is to start counting from T1,
Long axis of psoas major is angled. It is not vertical.
In Radiograph of abdomen and pelvis it dose not show sharp borders.
In MRI abdomen and pelvis it has sharp borders but the cross section will have to be measured manually after adjusting inevitable reductio in image.
