I have few plant sample in powder from. i want to know total amount of secondary metabolite present in sample. I run GC-MS but here i got only names.now i am interested to know its exact amount present in my plant sample. As standers are too costly so kindly guide me any alternative to know the amount of secondary metabolite in sample without standards.
Hi, What did you want to know? If you want the qualitative analysis of your extract? If Yes, I think you can apply some free-on-line MS data bases such as MassBank, MzCloud, Metlin, Metfrag etc ( link can be searched via Google) to predict the chemical structures of compounds in your extract. For quantification you need to have authentic standards of the target compounds. Without any standards you cannot do quantification.
i guess you mean standards and yeah than can be quite costly or straightforward unaffordable in phytochemistry. Sadly without them you won’t be able to achieve exact quantification...but you can use chemicaly similar cheap compounds(for example Atropin for Alkaloids) to achieve relative quantification by using them as internal standards. Just follow the common guidelines for the use of internal standards.

Hi Sandip, have you ever thought about a CLND (Chemiluminescence Nitrogen Detector)? It detects all compounds containing nitrogen. Calibrated with caffeine, for example. So you can do without specific standards. However, the detector leads to lower findings with vicinal nitrogens.
