Your question is the one million dollar question - however, as a terrestrial ecologist I think that a common effort in which soil scientists from a wide range of disciplines could be able to tickle the problem. As I so in your interest is mainly oriented to soil physical and chemical aspects - I think that biota community in other words a holistic approach could be of a great help.
