Rapid increase in the battery run electric vehicle causes a degradation in power quality. I want to analyze these power quality issues with electric vehicle penetration.
A.C to D.C converson would not hampers much the power quality. But the quality would be hamper by extra loading, due to increased charging station for vehicle and it use. Hence, considered the balance loading with 3 phase rectifier, the used 3phase 3wire system for economy and efficiency, could not be advisable, for created unbalanced, if station load is not exactly equally distributed due to extra use, the shifted neutral would cause, unbalance voltage of phases(reduction and rise, in voltages of heavily and lightly loaded phases respectively), hence without considering economy and efficiency, 3phase 4wire system should be advisebled. Total loading on load area should be calculated and maintained, with the consideration of raised power demand, in peak hours, on electric vehicles charging stations of load area, to meintained the frequency and voltage with in the tolerance limit.
High penetration of electric vehicles will have a significant impact on utilities, leading to a new source of electricity sales and new business opportunities. Many utilities and governments have worked proactively to study the impacts of electric vehicles on the grid and the best ways to incorporate ZEVs into their future plans. Although high electric vehicle uptake with uncontrolled charging could cause stress on the grid, these
challenges are likely to develop slowly and can be avoided.
In order to avoid adding to peak demand and reduce upgrade expenses, utilities can passively promote grid-friendly charging behavior by adjusting electricity rate structures while avoiding pricing schemes that penalize electric vehicle owners.
Electric vehicles the adverse impact of the electric vehicle charging loads on the operating parameters of the power system. The high charging loads of the fast charging stations results in increased peak load demand, reduced reserve margins, voltage instability, reliability problems and grid is polluted by harmonics.
At wide area grid level, it is not expected to see major impacts. Locally combined with the intermittent renewables, I see increased voltage variations and harmonics as major degradation of the power quality
