hi everyone,

I read some notes on peierls transition ( for instance: PHYSICAL REVIEW B 77, 165135, 2008). It is mentioned that : " Peierls was the first to point out that such a system is formally unstable against any doubling of the unit cell, because it creates an additional potential with a non-zero component at q = 2kF , V (q) != 0 and opens a gap.)

but I can not understand why such additional potential happen?

can anyone describe it clearly for me what has happened that make a 1D system unstable in this condition? Is there any clear reference on this subject?

thanks
