It is found that the doping of carbons leads to an increase in the double layer capacitance between the porous electrode and the electrolyte. In addition it increases the transfer rate of charges across the electrolyte electrode interface.

The surface area and pore size distribution are important parameters for the performance of supercapacitor, in addition, surface chemistry and electrical conductivity that also influence their electrochemical performance. Carbons doped with electron-donating or electron-withdrawing heteroatom, such as nitrogen, boron, phosphorus, sulfur , boron-nitrogen (B-N), nitrogen-sulfur (N-S) and nitrogen-phosphorus (N-P) present outstanding electronic properties, and the enhancement of wettability of electrodes, due to the functional groups, markedly resulting in a high surface utilization and pore accessibility. these are general points related to doping effect on carbon based sueprcapacitors.
