My current work focuses on perovskite-based electrocatalysts for water oxidation. In my electrochemical test measurements, I need to understand how to test the stability. Specifically, how should the parameters for chronopotentiometry and chronoamperometry measurements be set up to assess the long-term stability of these electrocatalysts in OER?
Both chronopotentiometry and chronoamperometry are valuable tools for assessing the long-term stability of perovskite-based electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER).
Chronopotentiometry (CP):
- Function: Measures the potential change over time at a constant current density.
- Stability assessment: Monitors the increase in potential required to maintain the set current density. A gradual increase indicates degradation of the catalyst, requiring more energy to drive the OER.
Parameter Setup:
- Choose a value relevant to your application. Aim for a current density within the operating range of your target device.
- Consider starting slightly below the desired operating point to avoid overly stressing the catalyst initially.
- Select a time frame long enough to observe potential changes indicative of degradation. This could range from hours to days depending on the expected stability of your perovskite.
Chronoamperometry (CA):
- Function: Measures the current response over time at a constant applied potential.
- Stability assessment: Monitors the decrease in current over time. A significant decrease suggests catalyst deactivation and loss of OER activity.
Parameter Setup:
- Choose a potential slightly higher than what's needed to achieve a specific current density in a linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) experiment. This ensures sufficient overpotential to drive the OER reaction.
- Consider using a potential relevant to your application for a more practical assessment.

Most OER stability tests are run by CP (from my experience), for example, setting current density as 10 mA/cm^2 and keeping in 0.1 M KOH or 1 M KOH for as long as you can (normally 1 or 2 days).
It is better to refer the papers in your area. Most of them should have these parameters.
