Upon reading and understanding the article entitled “Tenets of Specimen Management in Diagnostic Microbiology” by Rajeshwar Reddy Kasarla and Laxmi Pathak, it was highlighted that specimen management in diagnostic microbiology is an essential aspect of healthcare research, involving detailed policies and procedures that govern every step of the specimen handling process with precision. The aforementioned article was the basis of the formulation of the question.
Meticulous handling of microbiology specimens is essential for reliable results. From prompt transportation in sterile containers to timely processing in the lab, every step aims to prevent contamination and preserve microbial viability (Stempak et al., 2019). Different specimens require specific processing methods, such as aerobic/anaerobic cultures and testing for mycobacterial and fungal pathogens if indicated (Lakshmi et al., 2018). Automation in labs enhances efficiency seamlessly (Bourbeau & Ledeboer, 2013), while proper storage ensures accurate identification, particularly in settings with limited processing availability (Kneidinger et al., 2013).
1- Try your best to maintain all sterile criteria and remember that alcohol only can’t kill spore forming bacteria so sometimes you have to make complete sterilization of surfaces by flame to ensure complete sterility. Endospore forming bacteria resist UV rays in laminar
2- check the specimen sterility by growing on nourishing media applying streak method and take one colony of the grown bacteria or fungus then Use selective media
We have been working in the field of microbial infections of humans and animals since 1973. The collection of sample and immediate transport in cold chain, maintenance of sterile conditions in the laboratory, use of good quality media, and personal hygiene while processing of samples etc. are very important to get good results.
