Greetings.

I wish to conduct SSA analysis on biochar samples using both N2 (BET) and CO2 (D-R) sorption. So far I understand N2 will provide SSA associated with mesopores and CO2 SSA associated with micropores (< 2 nm).

Say SSA_N2 is the SSA calculated for N2 and SSA_CO2 for CO2, which of the following is the correct interpretation?

Interpretation 1: CO2 probes ONLY micropores

  • Total SSA = SSA_CO2 + SSA_N2
  • Mesopore SSA = SSA_N2
  • Micropore SSA = SSA_CO2

Interpretation 2: CO2 probes meso and micropores

  • Total SSA = SSA_CO2 (usually this one is the largest)
  • Mesopore SSA = SSA_N2
  • Micropore SSA = SSA_CO2 - SSA_N2

I understand any SSA measurement made is not really the TOTAL SSA but only that which the particular gas is able to probe.

Also, I have read several authors that calculate porosity volume by considering the volume of liquid N2 contained within the sample at a given P/P0, usually close to 1, would it be reasonable to combine this volume and that calculated from the D-R equation to determine mesoporosity, microporosity, and "total" porosity? Would the interpretation be the same as the one for SSA?

I thank you in advance for your answers.
