Genuine software procurement is a challenge because, various measures taken by Microsoft can be bypassed and let users believe that they are using genuine products. As an auditor of information system what can one look at to ascertain genuine licensing?
Hi Joseph. I am not sure if I understand your question correctly. Maybe you could clarify it and provide information on the research question that you investigate. Do you want to inspect if a software product was provided by the original software vendor? What would be the risk from an audit perspective? Microsoft provides two solutions for this:
1. a self service tool called MAP (Microsoft Assesment and Planning) for software and licensing. This is the link to it: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/solutionaccelerators/ff807352.aspx
2. According and depending on your enterprise agreement with Microsoft, they can install an automatic mapping tool that will scan the servers and PC's. The result is a complete map of the Microsoft software installed. BTW, I think that they use the same MAP tool for this.
Take volume licence if required for organization, which is paper licence.
Compare them with alternatives such as LibreOffice in terms of
1. Functionality your organisation(s) require.
2. Use of standardised protocols and document formats
3. Licensing and re-use restrictions
4. Cost
