A recent cyclone in Andhra Pradesh damaged many show rooms with glass as exterior. Many show rooms which flaunted expensive glass as walls, and exteriors came for a shock as they found the glass in pieces, and their merchandise looted or strewn or cars thrown out. wind speed of 220 kmph did the damage. Why is glass used when it is not safe, and also uses more power to cool the interiors?
From an architectural point of view, we usually consider glass in such circumstances because of its aesthetic properties. From the structural point of view, glass has limited capacity to withstand wind loads beyond certain limits. Therefore,the way forward is to come up with innovative ways to improve on it's bearing capacity and safety. The challenge is now to the scientists to pick it up.
