i have prepared lanthanide metal complexes and i have to go through its thermal analysis,how we calculate the theoretical mass loss and compare with experimental mass loss . i had used metal nitrate to prepare metal complexes hence i get confused whether nitrate group present in the formed complexes or not.
Coordination of nitrate NO3- to a metal should be followed by a shift for the typical NO3- stretching vibration such as the band at 1051 cm-1. Thus, the most simplies way is IR-spectroscopy.
When using TGA, you might detect the loss of NO2. However, if your sample contains nitrate anions (not coordinated), the result will be the same. Therefore, I would recommend IR or better Raman spectroscopy.
I would recommend to combine FTIR, TGA and conductivity measurements of the complexes.

FTIR and Raman are preferable than TGA. Because weight loss associated with individual -NO3 might not be seen. Also presence of reactant can misguide you.
Observing the weight losses from TGA graph, you can easily calculate which fragments of your proposed complex are responsible for individual weight loss.
