It's becoming a universal trend in publications where people no longer go to the libraries and read journals in printed version. This has a great influence to the behavior of the readers since they don't even have a chance to at least skim throughout the pages by using their fingers, but only search for the specific paper or look at the table of contents and go straight to the paper of interest. Reminding that the purpose of publishing a paper is to provide useful knowledge to the relevant society, it would be much easier for the readers to figure out which paper is interesting if there is a simple and intuitive description on every papers (which is the main purpose of graphical abstract).
Note that nowadays also in pure electrochemisty journals such as electrochimica acta and electrochemistry communications are highly encouraging to submit graphical abstracts.
This is used to attract reader attention in their online views (and online feeds/readers if you subscribe to any of them). If done well, it can tell you quite a bit whether or not you want to read the entire article or move to the next.
Thank you, Sonja. In my field, corrosion and electrochemistry, it is seldom required. However, I heard that some European journals ask for graphical illustrations, after accepting the papers, to be featured on the opening of a volume of a journal.

Im my field of optical sensors - every single time. Basically it is the one picture I see next to a title in a RSS-Feed to tell me what this paper is about. So I always try to do my best to show what I present within each specific paper.
