When the leguminous plants experience deficiency of Nitrogen then release specific flavonoid , the specific Rhizobium in the response of that particular flavonoids get attached to the root hair's and causes curling and infection, and release of gibberellin and auxin helps in formation of nodule,
Nod gene helps farmation of nodules,
Favorable condition:- Good availablity of phosphorus, molybdenum, iron, lime ( calcium) .
Legume plants under nitrogen stress from deficiency secrete from their root flavonoid factors which are stimulative to the motility of the Rhizobium bacteria which seek out the root tips which between to interact more intimately. The root curls and the bacteria are able to enter and root hairs.
If the plant has sufficient nitrogen level the elicitation by flavonoids is reduced.
This is a very simplified explanation of the gross process.

The nodulation of a legueme is fascinating. I love the way of the communication via chemical from the plant to the symbiotic bactieria. The way the facteria swim to the root tip and way the tip of the root hair embraces the bacteria which burros it way into the root and the emplsion of combined life within.
To mee it somes some love and grand design.
Symbioxis means living together and indeed we as human need more of that.
