People read a lot in an education framework. Understanding the content of a new scientific publication requires reading and understanding other sources of information.
How much sentences has to be read before you can understand a new scientific publication? Any guesses?
My answer is very close to Doris. I would add that we need to know before hand what is the use we can give to that information. An article we read just because we are required to may take us sometimes and we may retain a little of that in a short period of time. If we need that information for a ongoing project, then we will read it fast, it will be easier to understand it and we will likely retain that for a long period.
A key factor is memory? How much is memorized after reading a source?
How important is the scale of analysis?
People/citizens/journalists might understand the broad message in a scientific publication, but not necessarily the details and arguments behind the formulation of the broad message?
What about the overloaded referees (too many articles to be judged) or professors (too much administration to be handled)?
Should reading become a full-time job as a scientist/professor?

You can read the same article 100 times: if you do not have access to the back-ground information, e.g. truly understanding the publications cited in the new publication, can you truly understand the new publication with their details?
Do co-authors always truly understand the content of own new publications, especially in an interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary framework?
Cf. People with different competences will each contribute at their level to the construction of the mental cathedral?

How many people can recall the exact wording of a single sentence in a scientific publication (own versus other) one week, two weeks.... one year, two years.... after the person have read the sentence?

I think it depends on who read it and what the topic is. As we know, everybody's brain and understanding are different. Genius persons understand things e.g. new scientific publication in a moment but some others may last a week or longer to understand it.
I myself sometimes understand the new scientific publication in a day but most of times it lasts a month or longer. It is topic dependent.
Perhaps there are fast versus slow people, but the amount to be read (input to be mentally exploited) might be the same?
It is a difficult question to answer. Each article needs a different attention but when one has read many articles each time it is simpler to decide before if it is important for oneself and the own line of research.
