Trade in wild-caught birds is big business. Most data on which species are traded and in what volumes comes from CITES. But the CITES Appendices do not cover all traded bird species, e.g. it does not cover the common waxbill Estrilda astrild.
Is there any information about how much of the total bird trade that CITES covers, especially with regards to taxonomic identity of species covered or not?
Suggestions and pointers much appreciated!

The global trade in wild birds has declined from an estimated 7.5 million birds a year in 1975 (when CITES came into effect) to around 1.5 million in 2007, not including poultry. And 2009, it is said that trade in live exotic birds accounted for 1,416 listings or 19.9 % od total trade. The majority of these listings, 92 %, were categorized as “Likely Violation”; in a number of cases, sellers admitted outright their birds were illegal. If indeed illegal, this may indicate major conservation and animal welfare concerns associated with the live bird trade that should be further investigated.
