Now government is promoting production of NCU in a big way to improve nitrogen-use efficiency. Recently, government had also already decided in January to allow urea producers to produce NCU upto 100% of production and making it mandatory to produce a minimum of 75% of domestic urea as neem coated. Presently, India is importing about 80 lakh metric tonnes of urea out of total demand of 310 lakh metric tonnes. About 20-25 per cent of indigenous urea is neem-coated. Use of NCU in place of normal urea, on average 20% less NCU is required than normal urea thus, save the money and farmers get benefitted.
As per the Fertilizer Control Order 1985, Government of India presently we need 0.350 kg neem-oil to coat 1 tonne of urea. However, ICAR recommendation is 0.5 kg neem-oil for 1 tonne of urea and it is under consideration in the ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers to adopt this recommendation. In our own assessment also we need minimum 0.5 kg neem-oil for perfect coating of 1 tonne urea.
