Multiple choice questions should be difficult to answer and to guess ,so multiple choice questions writing alongwith answer key is challenging to even experienced faculty
I do it myself and I didnt need any training...you just need passion for the courses you teach, and intelligence/creativity 😊 values any hired faculty should have 😊 For further details on the latter, please check the eprint to be published soon in https://www.researchgate.net/project/How-Not-to-Lead-Academia
At first, i used to go out for training on how to create effective questions using multiple choice answers and others but as soon as i have grasped the concept and the principle, I'm on my own. It just takes a little bit of your time and of course do not forget to do some item analysis every end of the exam to see to it that you are asking questions properly and getting the right response from the students accordingly. I hope this help.😊
It does take fairly longer time to prepare multiple choice questions when compared to open ended questions. This is because the options given have to be closely related and not random.
I think it depends with the experience , level of educations, subject matters, and other relative thinking. If you want to make a questionnaire in History and Literature, you have to read much to make a quality question where in Marketing you need ticks which requires the witty power of the incumbent. Theoretical knowledge is power here. Not the main issue.
I used the following benchmark: one man day is 6 hours and in that 6 hours one can build up to 4 MCQs. However, my experience was limited to building assessment tools for competency testing using Simulated Judgement Test where each answer option was mapped to one or more different proficiency levels of different competency elements. In that way, by using lesser mini case studies, we can test multiple competency elements in one go. As for training, when I had to train new people on building competency framework and assessment tools, the accelerated version of training was only about 5 hours, after which the persons could build those assessment tools, but needed some improvements as they progressed.
